Accountability in Business: Establishing Your Company Rocks

In the last video, we talked about about how important it is to take our one-year objectives and bring them back to what we need to accomplish in the next 90 days. Today, we're looking at two ways to approach that. The first is, what do we want to accomplish as a company as a whole? And the second approach is, what do I personally want to accomplish?

Establishing Rocks

We're going to call these 90-day objectives or rocks. So what are those rocks for the company as a whole? Let's take a look at that. When we look at the one-year plan and see what we needed to accomplish, we have to prioritize the actual activities that we need to engage in and the results that we're looking for in the next 90 days. I recommend that you try to identify between three and seven things that need to be accomplished company-wide in order to be on track to meet our one-year objective.

Be S.M.A.R.T.

When we do that, we need to spend a little bit of time getting very specific again. We want to use S.M.A.R.T objectives, things that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and have a timeframe. The timeframe here, of course, is the next 90 days. Look at those one-year objectives that you had and think about exactly what do we need to do as a company to accomplish them, then write down those three to seven objectives. Don't get too ambitious because we're all busy and we all have a lot of things to do, but we want to keep working on the company. We need to state some that we can go ahead and get done to stay on track.

Who Is Responsible?

When you do this, it's not enough just to identify what they are and that we're going get them done 90 days from now. We also need to identify who is responsible for accomplishing it within the company. That's the accountability part. Without identifying exactly who is responsible for completing it, it will slip through the cracks. Take the time to look at your one-year plan, identify what needs to happen in the next 90 days, document exactly what it is stating it in a S.M.A.R.T fashion, then identify who will be responsible to get it done. In the next video, we're going look at your individual rocks as opposed to those for the company as a whole. Join me there! Thanks so much for visiting.
